The Setup

Like hundreds of other dealerships across the country, it added an AI-powered chatbot to its website to handle customer inquiries. The bot was built by Fullpath, a company specializing in online customer management tools for automotive dealers. The chatbot was powered by ChatGPT and was meant to help visitors find vehicles, ask about pricing, and schedule test drives.

The first sign of trouble came when Chris White, who was browsing the dealership's website looking at Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicles, noticed the small chat window in the corner was labeled "powered by ChatGPT." The Pranks

Fullpath's Response

Fullpath, the company behind the chatbot, responded to the incident through its co-founder Aharon Horwitz. He told Business Insider that the company estimated several hundred dealers were using its chatbots. He emphasized that the chatbot had never disclosed any confidential dealership data during the viral prank session - an important distinction, since the main concern for dealerships would be whether internal pricing, customer information, or dealer cost data had leaked.

Business Insider independently reviewed some of the interaction logs and confirmed that the chatbot did frequently reject off-topic requests and attempt to steer conversations back to car-related topics. The guardrails worked some of the time. But "some of the time" is not a useful reliability standard for a tool representing a business to the public.
